i found this fairylike dress when i was out thrifting yesterday and with some minor research discovered it was designed by the english label jean varon (aka john bates).

"I called it Jean Varon because at the time an English name like John Bates meant nothing; you had to appear to be French. Jean is French for John and Varon because there was no ‘V’ in the rag trade book. Jean Varon made a good graphic image" (John Bates quoted in Boutique by Marnie Fog).

bates’ signature looks were the empire line, the see-through mesh dress and flowing chiffon gowns. his work has been worn by jean shrimpton and twiggy alike.

the gown i found appears to be from his early to mid ’70s collection, as the tag matches the one used during that era. unfortunately, bates is among one of the ‘great forgotten’ designers of his time, but his influence is ever-lasting. he is also credited with the invention of the mini-skirt!

i’m thinking about putting this piece up for sale when i start my etsy shop…would anyone be interested in owning a jean varon?
